Moneyline Payout Formula — Calculate Your Winnings in Seconds

Two formulas cover every moneyline price. Favorites use one; underdogs use the other. Learn them once and you can price any bet in your head.

What Is the Moneyline Payout Formula?

American odds use $100 as the reference unit. The sign tells you which formula to reach for.

  • Favorite (negative odds): Profit = Stake ÷ |odds| × 100
  • Underdog (positive odds): Profit = Stake × odds ÷ 100

Total return in both cases is profit + stake. That's the number that hits your account.

How Do I Calculate a Favorite Moneyline Payout?

Say the line is -190. You want to bet $50.

Profit = 50 ÷ 190 × 100 = $26.32. Total return = $76.32.

At -300 on a $100 bet: 100 ÷ 300 × 100 = $33.33 profit. You're risking three times what you stand to win. That's why betting heavy moneyline favorites requires a very high win rate just to break even.

How Do I Calculate an Underdog Moneyline Payout?

Say the line is +160. You bet $75.

Profit = 75 × 160 ÷ 100 = $120.00. Total return = $195.

At +300 on $50: 50 × 300 ÷ 100 = $150 profit. Underdogs pay more per dollar risked — but win less often. See a full breakdown in Moneyline Payouts — What You Actually Win at Each Odds Level.

What Does Implied Probability Have to Do With Payouts?

Every payout implies a win probability. A -300 line implies roughly 75% — meaning you must win three of four bets just to tread water. Payouts and probabilities are two sides of the same coin. Check out Implied Probability — How to Convert Moneyline Odds to Win Percentages to run those numbers too.

Also worth knowing: the sportsbook embeds its margin into both sides. The payout you calculate is already slightly lower than a true fair-odds payout. I cover exactly how much you're losing to the house in Vig and Juice on Moneylines.

Once you're comfortable with the math, the next step is comparing prices across books. A -150 at one book versus -160 at another is real money over a season. That's what line shopping moneylines is about. Must be 21+ (18+ in some states). Gambling problem? Call 1-800-GAMBLER.
